PhD Studentship: Curvature, Topology and Nonlinear Excitations in Quantum Fluids
Overview
The University of East Anglia offers a full-time, fixed-term PhD studentship in the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics, focusing on curvature, topology, and nonlinear excitations in quantum fluids. This project explores the intersection of geometry, topology, and nonlinear dynamics in ultracold Bose-Einstein condensates and superfluid helium films confined to curved two-dimensional surfaces. Students will use large-scale numerical simulations and analytical theory to examine systems such as tori, spheres, and other curved surfaces. The research covers how rotation generates turbulence and vortices on closed surfaces, how topology constrains vortex configurations, and how curvature might stabilise new solitary waves.
Who can apply
This PhD project is part of a competition for a Faculty of Science funded studentship, with funding available exclusively to UK applicants. The standard minimum entry requirement is a 2:1 degree in physics, mathematics, or relevant fields in natural sciences, computer sciences, or engineering.
What you get
The funding provides home tuition fees and an annual stipend for three years. The institutional PhD stipend rate is £21,805 per annum, subject to any agreed inflationary uplift for the 2027 to 2028 period.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a 2:1 degree in mathematics, physics, or relevant areas such as engineering, computer sciences, or natural sciences. The work arrangement is on site at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 24 February 2027. The program has a start date of 1 October 2027.
