Overview

This PhD studentship focuses on balancing wheat rust resilience and soil microbial diversity through an interdisciplinary, collaborative project. The research investigates how the disruption of disease susceptibility genes in wheat influences root exudation and shapes the rhizosphere microbiome to support sustainable agriculture. The position is based at the University of East Anglia within the School of Biological Sciences, and the candidate will join the Saunders and Malone Labs at the John Innes Centre.

What you get

The successful candidate receives a fully-funded studentship subject to UKRI terms and conditions, provided they meet UKRI eligibility criteria. The funding covers university fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants where the registering university waives the difference between home and international fees. The funding does not cover relocation expenses, visa costs, or the health surcharge associated with living in the UK.

Requirements

Applicants should be enthusiastic individuals who are keen to work on an interdisciplinary project combining plant pathology and rhizosphere microbiology. The research methodology involves conducting field and greenhouse experiments, applying metagenomics and environmental microbiology, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics, and utilizing spatial landscape models. Training is provided in plant pathology, molecular biology, environmental microbiology, and landscape modelling through collaboration with research leaders at Exeter University.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-12-16.
