Overview

The fellowship programme supports early-career researchers in conducting advanced international research and building academic collaborations between Sweden and Denmark. Successful participants spend three years on a research project divided between two locations. The first two years take place within an established research group at Uppsala University in Sweden. The final year of the project is conducted at a Danish university or another eligible public or non-profit research institution in Denmark. The initiative is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and managed through its Committee on Interdisciplinary Research.

What you get

Selected candidates receive up to DKK 3.6 million in total funding per fellowship, with an allocation of up to DKK 1.2 million per year. The grant covers a three-year period during which the fellow is employed and administered by the Danish host institution.

Who can apply

Early-career researchers with doctoral qualifications in eligible scientific disciplines are eligible for the programme. Applicants must hold a PhD in natural sciences, technical sciences, biomedicine, or biotechnology, which must have been obtained within five years of the fellowship start date. Documented leaves of absence are excluded from this five-year calculation. Individuals who are still completing their doctoral studies may also apply, provided their PhD supervisor submits a formal statement confirming that the degree will be completed before the fellowship commences.

Requirements

Proposed research projects must span fields such as natural sciences, technical sciences, biomedicine, or biotechnology. Projects may range from fundamental scientific investigations to innovative applied research, but they must demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach. Additionally, all proposals must show a clear potential to contribute to human health or sustainability, detailing how the research can generate scientific, technological, environmental, or societal benefits. The work requires a compulsory international mobility arrangement involving a primary research mentor in Sweden during the first two years and a return phase at a Danish host institution for the final year.

Key dates

Applications opened on 30 September 2026. The submission deadline is 29 January 2027 at 2:00 p.m. Copenhagen time. Results are expected to be announced in June 2027, and the next recurring call will take place in September 2027.
