Overview

The Nordic Scholarship Programme, hosted by the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) in Uppsala, Sweden, funds a one-month research visit for students and scholars doing Africa-focused research at institutions in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. Visitors gain access to NAI's specialized library collections and can work directly with resident Africa-focused scholars.

What you get

Selected scholars receive full coverage of return travel at the lowest fare from their home address in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland to Uppsala. They are given free, centrally located housing in Uppsala and a subsistence allowance of SEK 450 per day. A dedicated desk and computer are provided in a shared office at the Institute, along with priority access to the library's contemporary African books, periodicals, newspapers and government publications. Health insurance and personal travel or accident insurance are not included and must be arranged independently.

Who can apply

The programme is open to Master's students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and mid-career scholars. Applicants must be affiliated with, and physically based at, a recognized university or research center in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland, both when applying and during the stay. Their research must fall within the social sciences or humanities and focus on Africa. Any nationality or citizenship can apply provided the Nordic affiliation condition is met. Former or current NAI staff and affiliated researchers are not eligible.

Requirements

Applicants submit an updated CV with a publication list where applicable, and a research project outline of 3 to 5 pages covering objectives and context, methodology and timeline, and the theoretical framework. They also provide a one-page NAI work plan setting out which part of the project will be done during the one-month stay. A signed letter of support from the academic supervisor or head of department must confirm the applicant's university affiliation and field of study. NAI assesses proposals on the applicant's original academic voice, and using generative AI tools to write the proposal may count against the application.

How to apply

All documents are prepared as PDFs in English and submitted through the Institute's online portal.

Key dates
