Nordic Scholarship Programme 2027 for Researchers
Overview
The Nordic Scholarship Programme 2027 lets students and researchers doing Africa-focused work at a university in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland spend one month visiting the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) in Uppsala. Through it, NAI aims to build capacity in producing knowledge about Africa and to promote and establish relations with and between Nordic research communities.
What you get
The scholarship covers travel by the least expensive fare from the scholar's residential address in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland to Uppsala and back. Scholarship holders get a desk and computer in a shared office at the Institute and free, centrally located accommodation in Uppsala. A subsistence allowance of SEK 450 per day is also included. Health care and other insurances are not covered.
Who can apply
Applicants must be pursuing Africa-oriented studies or research in the social sciences or humanities, as master's students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers or mid-career researchers. Citizenship does not matter, but applicants must be affiliated with and based at a university or research centre in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland, both when applying and when taking up the scholarship.
How to apply
Applications are made online with an up-to-date CV including a publications list, and an outline of the research project of 3 to 5 pages. The outline covers the objective, the method and time frame, and a brief theoretical basis. A one-page work plan must be specific to the time spent at the Institute, and a signed letter of support from the applicant's supervisor or head of department must confirm affiliation and field of research.
Applications are mainly judged on the research outline. Reviewers read proposals closely and want to learn about the research in the applicant's own words and framing, and using AI to develop the text may count against an applicant.
Key dates
The stated deadline was October 11, 2026.
