Overview

This doctoral opportunity offers a funded PhD studentship in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, operating through the ARIES Doctoral Training Partnership. The project is titled From Climate Information to Climate Action: Evaluating How Climate Information Use Shapes Local Adaptation Decision Making in English Local Authorities and Opportunities for Improvement. The research investigates how local authorities utilize climate hazard, risk, and adaptation information in public-sector decision-making. The successful researcher will utilize a qualitative, multi-method approach involving documentary analysis, semi-structured interviews, consultation survey data analysis, and engagement with the UK Met Office climate services team.

Who can apply

The studentship is open to applicants worldwide, including international candidates, though a limited number of funded positions are available for international applicants. Candidates must have a strong academic background, including a bachelor's degree equivalent to at least a UK honours degree classification of 2:1. Applicants are also required to demonstrate English-language proficiency equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each category.

What you get

Successful candidates who meet UK Research and Innovation eligibility criteria receive funding that covers university tuition fees, an annual maintenance stipend set at £21,805 based on the 2026/27 rate, and a research training and support grant. For eligible international awardees, the registering university waives the difference between home and international tuition fees. The funding does not cover relocation expenses, living costs in the UK, visa fees, or the immigration health surcharge.

Requirements

Applicants should possess a clear interest in climate science, environmental policy, or climate adaptation, along with an understanding of UK climate science or adaptation policy. Candidates ideally demonstrate skills in qualitative or quantitative data collection, analysis, and synthesis, combined with strong written and verbal communication skills. The researcher will also gain membership in the Tyndall Early Career Network for specialized training and research community access.

Key dates

Doctoral studies begin on 1 October 2027, with options for either full-time or part-time study. All applications must be submitted by 16 December 2026 at 23:59.
