Announcing 3 PhD Studentships within Royal Holloway funded by the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards
Overview
Royal Holloway, University of London, is announcing three PhD studentships funded by the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards. Royal Holloway describes itself as a research-intensive university and takes part in a number of Doctoral Training Partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training. It runs a Researcher Development programme and supports a growing community of postgraduate researchers, with student-led activities, an annual conference and chances to meet researchers outside their own discipline.
Who can apply
The awards cover arts and humanities and related fields, and the department contacts listed are for English and Modern Languages including Creative Writing, Geography, History and Classics, the Law School, Music, Drama and Media Arts, and Politics, International Relations and Philosophy. A limited number of awards, 30 percent, are open to international students. Applicants must be able to start on 20 September 2027. Before applying, candidates must identify a supervisor and contact them directly, and need agreement from the proposed supervision team that they will support the application. Applicants may submit their own proposal or develop a project suggested by a supervisor who is looking for students.
What you get
Funding covers full-time or part-time tuition fees at the UK rate and a stipend at the UKRI rate, which for 2026/27 is £23,805 including London Allowance. The funding lasts 3.5 years and includes a three-month placement for a career-enhancing research activity.
How to apply
Applications are submitted through the Royal Holloway applicant portal, following the applicant guidance document published on the university site. Questions about opportunities within a department can go to its Postgraduate Lead. An information event for interested applicants is repeated on Wednesday 2 December at 5pm.
Key dates
Applications close on Monday 11 January 2027 at 12pm GMT. Applicants are notified of the outcome on Monday 1 March 2027, and students start on Monday 20 September 2027.
