Overview

The University of Sheffield has received an AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA) to support postgraduate researchers in its Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Sheffield's DLA studentships are associated with the AHRC North/Northwest Hub, in collaboration with nine other regional universities. For 2027/2028 the scheme supports four full PhD studentships per year. Up to one of these may go to an outstanding international candidate, so overseas students are welcome to apply but should expect particularly intense competition for that place.

What you get

The studentships last 3.5 years, pro-rata for part-time study. They include a maintenance stipend at the UKRI rate, currently £21,805 in the 26/27 academic year, and payment of tuition fees at the Home or International rate as applicable.

Who can apply

The awards are open to postgraduate researchers in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Candidates who are not already enrolled on a PhD are invited to apply.

How to apply

The application has two parts. First, applicants submit a study application for a PhD place at the University of Sheffield through the online application portal. After submitting it and receiving an application number, they submit a funding application through a separate form that asks for that number. The funding application must be completed in one sitting, and a template is available for preparing answers.

Key dates

The deadline for the study application is Monday 14th December 2026. The deadline for the funding application is 5 PM GMT on Friday 19th February 2027.
