Fully Funded PhD at Durham University 2027: 11 Studentships Open to International Students (Apply Before 15 January!)
Overview
Durham University offers up to eleven fully funded PhD studentships in Transformative Humanities starting in October 2027. Supported by Durham’s AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award alongside the Faculties of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences, the scheme backs candidates whose projects combine interdisciplinary humanities research with real-world impact. Up to nine awards are available for home students and up to two awards for overseas students.
Who can apply
Both home and overseas students are eligible to apply for the competition. Applicants must be accepted to a Durham PhD programme with a supervisory team led by Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences. The supervision must involve collaboration across at least two departments to reflect the cross-disciplinary nature of the scheme.
What you get
Each successful award provides a tuition fee waiver and a stipend at the level set by UKRI for either 3.5 years of full-time study or 7 years of part-time study. Recipients also receive additional funding opportunities, as well as access to training and placement resources. Home awards cover tuition at the home rate, while overseas awards cover tuition at the overseas rate.
Requirements
Applicants need to prepare a research proposal of up to 1,000 words including footnotes and excluding bibliography, detailing research questions, context, approach, methods, relevance to transformative humanities, and why Durham is the right fit. Additional required materials include a CV of no more than two pages, an equal opportunities monitoring form, and contact details for two referees.
How to apply
Applicants should first contact potential supervisors to discuss their project. Applications must be submitted to the lead supervisor’s department, choosing from Classics and Ancient History, English Studies, History, Modern Languages and Cultures, Music, Philosophy, or Theology and Religion. Under the scholarship details section of the funding area, applicants must type Transformative Humanities.
Key dates
The application deadline is 15 January.
