Overview

The World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program is a professional development opportunity for Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa. Selected fellows work directly with World Bank Group teams on research, economic policy, technical assistance and lending operations, contributing to projects tied to the Group's mission of reducing poverty and promoting shared prosperity.

The 2027 cycle involves a six-month assignment beginning in January 2027, at World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, D.C., or in a World Bank Group country office. Unlike an academic scholarship, the fellowship is built around hands-on professional experience, and fellows are hired for the assignment. Exact duties depend on the fellow's specialization and the needs of the unit where they are placed.

Who can apply

Applicants must be nationals of a Sub-Saharan African country. They must either be in the final year of a Ph.D. programme or have completed a Ph.D. within the previous three years, in a field relevant to the World Bank Group's work. Candidates must be 32 or younger by 1 January 2027.

Excellent written and spoken English is required, along with strong quantitative and analytical skills, which are especially useful in economics, development finance, public policy, data analysis, infrastructure, health and agriculture. Women are encouraged to apply.

What you get

Fellows gain practical experience on real development work in a global institution, alongside economists, researchers, policy specialists and other practitioners. The experience can support later careers in international development, economic research, public policy, government, international organizations, think tanks, academia or development consulting, and it builds a professional network.

Key dates

Applications opened on 15 July 2026 and close on 25 August 2026. Fellowships are expected to start in January 2027.
