Overview

The Center for Biological Diversity is hiring a Wildlife Conservation Advocate for its Urban Wildlands program. The role is full-time and regular, performed remotely from California, with the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento or Los Angeles preferred. The Urban Wildlands program works on wildlife habitat, connectivity, land-use planning, freshwater systems, climate change and development in urban-wildland areas. The advocate reports to the Urban Wildlands Director and has no direct reports, working with scientists, lawyers, organisers, media professionals, environmental groups and community groups.

What you get

The salary is $63,600 to $91,000 per year depending on experience and applicable local and state requirements. Eligible regular staff working 30 or more hours per week receive medical, dental and vision benefits, employer contributions to health savings arrangements, disability insurance, basic life insurance, a lifestyle spending account, and a 403(b) with employer matching. Leave includes paid holidays, personal days, vacation, sick, parental, personal, caretaker and pet caretaker leave, and staff get a 12-week paid sabbatical after five years.

The advocate acts as a public expert on wildlife connectivity and conservation, especially around urban expansion, habitat loss and climate change. Work includes writing comment letters, reports, policy documents, factsheets and educational materials, advancing policy on freshwater systems, connectivity, threatened and endangered species and climate resilience, presenting at public hearings, working with local planning officials, giving media interviews, and building alliances with environmental, environmental justice and frontline community groups.

Requirements

Applicants need at least three years of professional experience or an advanced degree in conservation biology, ecology, public policy, planning or a related field, along with scientific literacy and strong research, analytical, writing and public speaking skills. Knowledge of environmental laws such as CEQA, NEPA and the state and federal Endangered Species Acts is important, and experience working with coalitions is required. The schedule is Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work. Occasional travel and in-person work are needed, and attending the remote annual staff retreat, about four to five days of travel, is encouraged.

How to apply

Applicants complete the online application with a cover letter, resume, reference list and transcripts; an unofficial transcript is acceptable.

Key dates

The deadline is October 15, though the position may stay open until filled. The desired start date is as soon as possible.
