We Animals Interim Executive Director 2026: Remote Leadership Role Paying $110,000 CAD
Overview
We Animals, a Canadian nonprofit that advocates for animals through photojournalism, is looking for an Interim Executive Director to lead the organization during an 18-month parental leave. The post is remote and reports to the Board of Directors while working closely with the Founder and President. The organization is a fully remote team of about 14 people, roughly 11.9 full-time equivalents, spread across North America and Europe. Its work uses photography, investigations and storytelling to show the realities of animals within human systems.
The interim leader is expected to keep the organization stable and continue existing strategic and financial priorities rather than introduce major structural change. Duties cover strategy, people management, finance, fundraising, governance, risk and operations. This includes implementing multi-year plans, setting operational KPIs, supervising the directors of development, visual content, and marketing and communications along with the operations manager, managing the annual budget with external accountants and auditors, overseeing fundraising strategy and preparing materials for board meetings and the Annual General Meeting.
Who can apply
Applicants need at least 7 years of progressive nonprofit leadership, operations or organizational management experience, including at least 3 years in a senior role covering people, budgets and planning. They should have experience managing senior staff, working with a nonprofit board, handling budgets, human resources and institutional donors, and working in remote, asynchronous teams. Strong English and alignment with the organization's animal advocacy philosophy and vegan values are required, and candidates must be legally authorized to work in their country of residence. Ideally there are 3 to 4 hours of regular overlap with Eastern Time, and people in Canada, the Americas, the UK, Ireland and Portugal are especially encouraged.
What you get
The contract is 40 hours per week at a salary of $110,000 CAD. Benefits include flexible hours, three weeks of paid vacation prorated by hours worked, an extended holiday closure, a benefits package, a remote work stipend, paid training and a professional development allowance.
