Overview

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is seeking a home-based Research Consultant to support its strategic partnerships work. UNIDO is a specialized United Nations agency that promotes inclusive and sustainable industrial development, working in areas such as industrial policy, innovation, sustainable energy, digital transformation, resource efficiency, investment and technology transfer.

The assignment is structured around remote work, so the consultant does not need to relocate to a UN office. Because UNIDO relies on cooperation with governments, development institutions, businesses, financial organizations and research bodies, the research aims to help the organization understand potential partners, their interests and capabilities, and where collaboration could add value.

What the consultant does

The work sits between research, analysis, stakeholder intelligence and strategy. The consultant conducts structured research on organizations, institutions, industries, policies, initiatives, funding trends and development priorities relevant to UNIDO, gathering information from several sources, comparing findings and producing concise analytical outputs.

Stakeholder mapping is a core task. Potential partners may include governments, international organizations, development institutions, private-sector companies, foundations, financial institutions, universities and research organizations. The consultant helps identify who they are, what they focus on and where their interests overlap with UNIDO priorities.

The consultant also assesses whether a possible partnership has real strategic value, looking at objectives, geographical focus, expertise, networks, resources and past collaborations. Findings are turned into research reports, briefing notes, stakeholder profiles, presentations and background papers that help teams decide which stakeholders to approach, which opportunities deserve further study and what risks to weigh.

Requirements

The role suits professionals with experience in research, strategic partnerships, international development, policy analysis and stakeholder engagement. Strong writing is essential, along with attention to detail, the ability to judge which information is credible and current, and the skill to summarize extensive research clearly for decision-makers.
