How to Find and Apply for Remote Jobs Safely

Updated October 6, 2026 · 4 min read

Remote work lets you work for an organization in another city or country, which is attractive if opportunities near you are limited. It also changes how you search, apply and evaluate offers. This guide covers the basics: where to look, how to apply, and how to avoid common problems.

What 'remote' can mean

Not every remote job is the same, and the wording in the listing matters. Check which of these it is:

  • Fully remote, anywhere: you can work from any country, often with a time zone overlap requirement.
  • Remote within a country or region: you must live in a particular country, for tax, legal or time zone reasons.
  • Hybrid: partly remote, partly in an office, so you must live within commuting distance.
  • Remote, but with travel: a few trips per year to meet the team or clients.

Where to look

  • The careers pages of organizations you admire, including international NGOs, universities, research institutes, startups and technology companies. Many hire remote staff.
  • Job boards and listing sites with remote filters, including our own jobs section, where you can browse remote opportunities.
  • Professional networks, alumni groups and communities in your field. Many remote roles are filled through recommendations.
  • Freelance and contract platforms, if you are comfortable with project-based work.
  • Short remote internships and volunteering for experience, which can lead to paid roles.

Check the details before you apply

  • Eligibility by location: can the employer hire in your country? Many cannot employ people in every country, or require that you are registered as a contractor.
  • Time zone: how many working hours must overlap with the team? A role based in another continent may require early mornings or late evenings.
  • Type of work arrangement: employee or independent contractor. This affects taxes, social security, paid leave and insurance.
  • Pay: the amount, the currency, how often you will be paid, and how payments reach you, including any bank or transfer fees.
  • Equipment and internet: who provides the laptop and who covers connectivity?

Tailor your application for remote roles

Employers who hire remotely look for the same skills as any employer, plus a few more: self-discipline, clear written communication, reliability and the ability to work with little supervision. Show these in your application with real examples, such as a project you managed on your own, a distributed team you worked with, or a course you completed independently.

Keep your CV short and focused, write a clear cover letter that mentions why you are interested in this role and how you will work remotely, and make sure your online profiles match what you claim. Many remote roles also ask for a short test task, so allow time to do it carefully.

Prepare for remote interviews

  • Test your connection, camera and microphone ahead of time, and choose a quiet place.
  • Be ready to explain how you stay organized and communicate across time zones.
  • Ask about onboarding, how the team communicates, how performance is measured and what the first months look like.
  • Confirm the interview time in both time zones to avoid mix-ups.

Avoid scams

Remote job offers are often imitated by fraudsters. Do not pay anyone to get a job, do not accept a role without a real interview or written contract, and be careful with any "job" that involves receiving money or packages. Read our guide on spotting scholarship and job scams before you share documents or bank details.

Taxes and contracts

Tax and legal rules for remote workers depend on where you live and where your employer is based, and they change. Before you accept an offer, ask whether you will be an employee or a contractor, who handles taxes and social contributions, and what happens if you move. If the amount is significant, it is worth getting advice from a local accountant or a qualified professional.
