Overview

The Trevor Project, a leading organization focused on suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ+ young people, is hiring a Manager, State Advocacy. The full-time role is remote within the continental United States, Alaska or Hawaii, with a salary of $75,000 to $80,000 per year. The manager will help design and carry out proactive state-level legislative strategies and campaigns covering topics such as youth online safety, state appropriations and grants, welcoming spaces for LGBTQ+ young people, LGBTQ+ rights and youth mental health, and will also contribute to defensive policy work when needed.

What you will do

The postholder keeps a daily bill-tracking system, follows state and federal developments, and helps set policy goals and longer-term strategy. They write and edit policy memos, legislative letters, talking points, reports and public advocacy resources. They build partnerships with nonprofits, government officials and legislative offices, support grassroots and grasstops advocacy using email, SMS and other digital tools, and may represent the organization at panels, conferences and meetings. They also coordinate with other internal teams, manage several projects at once and train and mentor volunteers and interns.

Requirements

Applicants should have about 3 to 5 years of experience in legislative analysis, drafting and amendment strategy in a state legislative or similar setting, with technology and appropriations policy experience considered useful. They also need 3 to 5 years of experience communicating complex ideas in writing and speech, a record of building long-term relationships, and at least one year using legislative tracking software. Familiarity with Google Docs, Sheets and Presentations is required, and strong English communication is expected. Experience with email and SMS platforms and with marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ people, communities of color and people with disabilities, is valued. The organization wants a genuine commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, youth mental health or crisis intervention advocacy, cultural competence, and the ability to build trust with audiences that may hold differing views.
