Overview

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is seeking a Systems Integration Administrator for its fully remote team. Founded in 1985 and based in Massachusetts, the FSF is a nonprofit that promotes the freedom of computer users to use, study, copy, modify and redistribute programs, with particular emphasis on the GNU operating system and GNU/Linux. The position is primarily intended for candidates in the United States, though the FSF says exceptions may be made for qualified applicants.

The administrator would help plan and manage the foundation's systems deployment, interoperability, sustainability and security strategies. The post reports to the Executive Director, works under the guidance of the Deputy Director, and collaborates with the Senior Systems Administrator and the GNU/Linux Systems Administrator. Duties include developing systems architecture, building custom GNU/Linux operating system images, supporting servers, managing disaster recovery, improving deployment practices, documenting decisions, ensuring data integrity, coordinating volunteer systems administrators and managing a queue of integration tasks. An on-call rotation may be involved.

Requirements

The role suits someone with about five years of relevant experience and a solid grounding in systems interoperability and architecture, server migration, disaster recovery, custom GNU/Linux development and enterprise software deployment. Understanding of free software principles and FSF technical guidance is important, as is the ability to judge whether systems can be built and reproduced using only free software tools. Documentation, project management, problem-solving and communication skills are also needed, along with the ability to work independently in a small team. Candidates near Boston are preferred because occasional access to the datacenter may be needed.

What you get

The fixed salary is $81,369.60 per year. Benefits include health coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, a subsidized dental plan, four weeks of paid vacation, 17 paid holidays, a weekly remote work allowance, public transport reimbursement, a 403(b) plan with employer matching, healthcare expense reimbursement and an ergonomic budget. The foundation also offers relocation help for the Boston area, conference travel, professional development and a possible annual performance bonus.

How to apply

Applicants email a cover letter, a resume and documentation of three significant infrastructure or automation projects built with free software tools, using the subject line Systems Integration Administrator. Materials must be in a free format such as plain text, PDF or OpenDocument.

Key dates

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the post is filled. To be assured of consideration, apply by September 4, 2026.
