Overview

The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is hiring a Special Projects Manager for its Communications Team to lead digital and communications projects. The role is full-time and remote, for candidates in time zones between the US West Coast and the UK, UTC-8 to UTC+1. The manager reports to the Director of Communications and delivers items such as campaign microsites, event identities, digital products and international creative contests, bridging strategy and execution. FLI is an independent nonprofit focused on the opportunities and risks of transformative technologies, working through policy engagement, education and grantmaking. It operates mostly virtually with a distributed team and offices in the United States and Europe.

What you get

The salary is US$100,000 to 190,000 per year, depending on experience and location. US-based employees may receive health insurance, more than 24 days of paid time off, paid parental leave, 401(k) matching, a work-from-home allowance and a professional development budget; other locations differ. The full team meets in person twice a year.

Duties include writing clear creative and technical briefs, clarifying scope and competing priorities, defining success with stakeholders, onboarding and managing external agencies and contractors, reviewing deliverables against briefs, brand guidelines and WCAG accessibility standards, developing digital products, running multi-month special projects and keeping the design system and website consistent.

Requirements

Applicants need experience coordinating complex multi-stakeholder projects, managing competing priorities, gaining senior alignment and turning unclear input into direction. Improving delivery processes such as intake, review, quality assurance or approval is expected, as is project experience in design, communications, digital or web work, ideally with external agencies. Strong quality control, calm under deadlines and the confidence to challenge unclear requests are needed. Preferred experience includes running contests, awards, grant rounds or festivals, working with content management systems, SEO, GA4 and Search Console, and nonprofit, policy, advocacy or campaign work.

How to apply

Applicants apply through the online recruitment system; email applications are not accepted. They submit a resume, a portfolio of design or digital products they have quality-assured if available, and two responses of no more than 200 words: the project they are most proud of and why they want to work with FLI.

Key dates

The deadline is October 2, 2026.
