South African Reserve Bank Bursary 2027: Apply for Undergraduate Economics Funding
Overview
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is accepting applications for its 2027 External Bursary Programme, which supports prospective undergraduate students planning to study economics-related fields. Run through the bank's Economic Research Department in collaboration with the SARB Academy, the programme aims to ease skills shortages in South Africa by backing students from disadvantaged backgrounds who combine strong academic potential with financial need.
Who can apply
The bursary is for students entering their first year of university in 2027 who have, or can obtain, provisional acceptance into an undergraduate degree in Economics, Economics and Econometrics, Economics and Mathematical Statistics or Economic Science. Applicants must have an average pass mark of at least 70% in their current year of study, with 70% or above in both English and Mathematics. They must be younger than 30 and show that they cannot afford university studies without a bursary.
Requirements
Supporting documents include examination results, proof of acceptance at a recognised institution, a student number and any other relevant papers. Incomplete or unsupported applications may affect consideration. Applicants must enter the promo code SARBERD27 on their application.
How to apply
Applications can be submitted through the bursary's online platform, by email or by post. The programme is competitive, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee selection. Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed and should be ready to discuss their academic background, intended field of study, career aspirations, interest in economics, financial circumstances and motivation. Successful applicants must sign an agreement with the South African Reserve Bank.
Key dates
Applications close on 30 September 2026.
