Overview

Swansea University offers a full-time, fixed-term position for a Research Officer in Antihydrogen Physics within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The role is based on site and involves joining the Swansea team at CERN as a full member of the ALPHA collaboration, which synthesises and traps antihydrogen for precision tests of fundamental symmetry. Following a major upgrade to the frequency metrology instrumentation in ALPHA, the goal of the work is to achieve or surpass the precision of spectroscopy found in ordinary hydrogen.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD in experimental physics. Candidates are required to have experience in the synthesis, laser cooling, and spectroscopy of antihydrogen, along with the development of Penning traps, cryogenics, microwave transport, and atomic spectroscopy using microwaves. Additionally, the role requires a Level 1 proficiency in the Welsh language, which entails the ability to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone with basic greetings, and use everyday words and phrases. This level can be attained by completing a one-hour course.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted in the format of a curriculum vitae and a cover letter. Applications are welcome in either Welsh or English, and both will receive equal treatment during the review process.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 29 November 2026. Interviews are scheduled to take place on 4 January 2027.
