Research Fellow - Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Overview
The University of Southampton is seeking a postdoctoral Research Fellow in synthetic organic chemistry to work in the group of Dr Jonathan George, in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The post is full time and fixed term for up to three years, on site, and is funded by the Leverhulme Trust. Chemistry at Southampton is known nationally and internationally and has world-leading facilities.
The project focuses on the biomimetic synthesis of complex natural products, particularly meroterpenoids, using cascade reactions inspired by biosynthetic pathways. It explores how simple precursors can be converted quickly into complex molecules through dearomatisation, rearrangement and cycloaddition chemistry, with emphasis on new reactions based on the natural reactivity of proposed biosynthetic intermediates, combining total synthesis with reaction discovery and mechanistic study.
What you will do
The fellow will carry out the research, contribute to the general running and maintenance of the laboratory and contribute to publications. The project offers advanced training in synthetic organic chemistry and structural characterisation, with opportunities to work with collaborators in computational chemistry, natural product isolation and biosynthesis. The fellow is encouraged to present at national and international conferences and to develop mentoring and leadership skills within the group.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry, or be close to completion, or have equivalent professional qualifications and experience. Strong expertise in organic synthesis is required, including multi-step synthesis, reaction optimisation, purification and structural characterisation. Experience in total synthesis, catalysis, photochemistry or mechanistic studies is an advantage, together with a good work ethic, problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for the project aims.
What you get
The salary is 36,636 to 44,746 GBP per year. The university recognises that employees may want working patterns that fit caring responsibilities, and gives due consideration to career breaks for reasons such as parental leave, disability or illness.
How to apply
Letters of recommendation are not needed at this stage but are requested for shortlisted candidates.
Key dates
The closing date is 26 October 2026, and interviews are due in November 2026.
