Research Fellow in Topological Photonics
Overview
The Nanophotonics Group at the University of Southampton is seeking an outstanding, creative Research Fellow to develop novel topological photonic crystals and metamaterials for efficient light control. The project is sponsored by the Royal Society and aims to deliver reconfigurable terahertz topological states for next-generation wireless communications. The post is full time and fixed term until 30 November 2028, starting on 1 December 2026 or as soon as possible afterwards, and is on site.
The postholder joins an interdisciplinary group at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, whose interests range from nanophotonics and metrology to metamaterials and topological photonics. The centre holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award, has a community of more than 49 nationalities and offers mentoring schemes, an Early Career Researchers Forum and the Women in Optics group, as well as flexible, hybrid and part-time working arrangements.
Requirements
Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent, or be nearing completion, in physics, optical engineering or another subject relevant to topological photonic materials, with proven practical expertise in photonic crystals and metamaterials. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation and teamwork in multidisciplinary groups are expected, along with a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Recent experience in micro and nanofabrication and materials characterisation, computational multi-physics and electromagnetics modelling with eigenmode analysis, or terahertz and microwave far-field spectra measurements and near-field scanning would be an advantage but is not essential.
What you get
The salary is 36,636 to 44,746 GBP per year, depending on experience. Benefits include a generous holiday allowance, access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme and subsidised health and fitness facilities.
Key dates
The closing date is 28 October 2026.
