Overview

The McClelland lab at UCL is offering a fixed-term research fellow position focused on algal biomineralisation and electrical excitability. This role takes place in the United Kingdom within an interdisciplinary team investigating how marine algae construct mineral structures and how cell membrane electrical signalling influences their physiology. The position runs until 30th September 2027, lasting up to 12 months depending on the start date.

What you get

The salary ranges from £46,261 to £54,019 per annum at Grade 7, depending on experience and the timing of a PhD award. Appointment at Grade 6B applies initially if the PhD has not yet been awarded, with backdating to Grade 7 upon thesis submission. The role qualifies for a Skilled Worker certificate of sponsorship or a Global Talent visa under UK immigration rules. Alongside the core research project, funding application support is provided to help develop independent research ideas.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD or have submitted their thesis in a relevant discipline, alongside extensive hands-on experience in algal biology, including experimental culturing and manipulation. Candidates need demonstrable expertise in at least one specialized area consisting of electrophysiology, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, or cryo-electron microscopy. A publication record appropriate to the career stage is required, along with the ability to work independently in a collaborative setting and communicate findings clearly. Additional experience with calcifying or silicifying marine algae, quantitative data analysis, programming, or writing funding applications is considered advantageous.

How to apply

Applications can be submitted on an onsite, full-time, part-time, flexible, or job-share basis. The process requires submitting application materials ahead of the closing date, and early submission is encouraged due to potential early closure if application volumes run high.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 8th November 2026 at 23:59 GMT. The position is fixed-term until 30th September 2027.
