Overview

The University of Warwick Department of Mathematics is hiring a Research Fellow for a three-year fixed-term position linked to a pan-European project focused on the containment and control of key plant pathogens and pests. The successful candidate will collaborate with leading mathematical modellers, plant scientists, and practical pest managers across Europe to influence policy. The fixed-term contract concludes on 12 October 2029.

Who can apply

Applicants should possess a strong quantitative and computational background, ideally with experience in epidemiological modelling. Ideal candidates bring experience in handling complex data, fitting mathematical models to data, and working in a team environment while developing their own ideas. Candidates should also demonstrate an interest in plant pests and diseases or a willingness to learn, alongside strong communication skills to interact with academics and stakeholders across multiple disciplines. Individuals who have not yet been awarded a PhD but are near submission or have recently submitted may receive an offer as a Research Assistant, with promotion to Research Fellow upon the successful award of the PhD.

What you get

The position provides a salary ranging from £36,320 to £46,970 per annum.

Requirements

The role involves generating detailed mechanistic models, developing efficient code to simulate spatio-temporal spread and control, fitting models to data, and evaluating robust control strategies. Candidates need to develop or extend novel models capturing the biology of invasive pests and produce efficient code for user-friendly platforms.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-11-11, and the fixed term ends on 12 October 2029.
