Overview

Imperial College London offers a full-time, fixed-term position as a Research Associate in Time-varying Metamaterials within the Department of Physics. This role is based at the South Kensington Campus and stems from a collaboration supported by the ERC Advanced grant LUMINOUS and the UKRI Programme Grant META4D. The initiative focuses on exploring temporal metamaterials and materials featuring synthetic motion, with the appointed researcher working alongside Professor Riccardo Sapienza and experimental collaborators.

What you get

The position provides a salary ranging from £50,733 to £59,484 per annum along with a remuneration package that includes 43 days of leave per year and pension schemes. Appointees gain the chance to contribute to a research programme establishing synthetic motion as a paradigm for spatio-temporal metamaterials, collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and participate in publications, conference presentations, and future grant applications. Additional benefits include career support for researchers, promotion and progression pathways, and access to staff networks supporting personal and professional wellbeing.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a PhD in Physics or a closely related quantitative discipline and possess an outstanding record of research achievement. Applicants need exceptional experimental skills demonstrated through the development of novel time-resolved measurements with femtosecond resolution, advanced data-analysis methodologies, and experience with time-varying metamaterials. The ideal candidate is intellectually ambitious, self-motivated, and interested in working between metamaterials and ultrafast laser physics.
