Overview
Sight and Life Foundation is seeking a Regulatory Expert for its fermentation project in Nigeria. The project looks at the potential of fermented foods, a widely used and relatively low-cost processing method already part of local diets, and aims to produce a practical roadmap for scaling them while meeting food regulatory requirements. The assignment runs from October 2026 to August 2027. The expert can work remotely from anywhere in Nigeria but must be willing to travel when needed.
The expert will identify the government bodies and regulators relevant to fermented foods and review food policies, legislation, standards, guidelines, requirements and approval processes, including international guidance from Codex, WHO and FAO. They will assess compliance requirements and the approvals needed for market entry, identify regulatory barriers, and estimate compliance costs such as testing, containment engineering, validation and regulatory filings. The work also covers biological safety standards, containment protocols and effluent discharge rules where relevant, plus a comparison of selected companies' practices against regional standards. Interviews with key stakeholders are part of the assignment. Outputs include reports, regulatory checklists and other documents for the Sight and Life team.
Who can apply
Applicants should have at least a master's degree in food science, food safety and quality, or a related field, along with extensive expertise and practical experience in food regulation and a track record of similar regulatory work. Experience training food regulatory personnel is an advantage.
Requirements
The role calls for excellent analytical, report-writing and presentation skills and effective communication in English.
