Overview

HelpAge International is recruiting a Project Accountant-LAC in its Programme Support Department. HelpAge works with a network of about 200 organisations across 99 countries to promote the rights and wellbeing of older people. The accountant will support financial management and accountability for humanitarian programmes in Venezuela and Colombia, with a focus on the emergency response. The job is full-time and fixed-term, at Grade C, based in a Spanish-speaking Latin American country, and runs to 31 December 2026 with a possible extension. The postholder reports to the Global Finance Business Partner.

What you will do

The accountant manages the accounts of the Venezuela Emergency Response Project and supports programmes in Venezuela and Colombia, making sure financial processes follow international standards, organisational procedures and local legislation. Tasks include helping prepare proposals and budgets, reviewing implementing partners' expenditure forecasts and reports, recording expenditure, checking coding against approved budgets and supporting documents, and verifying exchange rates. The role also prepares Project Financial Monitoring Reports, analyses variances with project managers, prepares monthly debtor balances for partners, completes Equals Card reconciliations and supports control-account reconciliation.

Requirements

Applicants need a degree in accounting, with postgraduate finance study desirable, and at least five years of accounting management experience in the public, private, humanitarian or development sectors. They should have experience with international donor-funded projects and implementing partners, accounting software and Microsoft Office, and knowledge of Latin American and Caribbean legislation. Fluent written and spoken Spanish and English are essential. The role calls for discretion with confidential information, independence, a proactive attitude and teamwork. Emergency-response experience with partners in the region is an advantage. Candidates should be able to travel within the region and ideally have the right to live and work there.
