Overview

The Animal and Plant Health Agency is offering a position for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist within the Avian Virology Workgroup. The work focuses on generating scientific evidence to protect the United Kingdom from animal diseases and to support government policy development. The appointee will take a leading role in a UKRI-funded Next Generation Veterinary Vaccines programme led by the University of Cambridge, which aims to establish a flexible plug-and-play vaccine platform against influenza viruses, coronaviruses, and emerging zoonotic Disease X threats.

What you get

The position offers a salary ranging from £47,557 to £52,010 per annum, with a pro rata rate applicable for part-time hours. Ongoing scientific and personal development is supported through appropriate training, and the role includes Civil Service benefits such as a pension.

Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate a strong drive for investigating viral and host factors that influence vaccine efficacy, antigenicity, and protective immunity using in vitro and in vivo approaches. Candidates need experimental and analytical skills to assess immune responses, vaccine performance, and the impacts of viral evolution. Safe working practices with infectious pathogens are required, including practical understanding of SAPO4 and ACDP3 containment environments. The role also calls for scientific, managerial, and project management capabilities, alongside the ability to manage staff and collaborate across organisations. The successful candidate must pass Counter Terrorist Checks.
