Overview

The University of Tübingen in Germany is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow with strong expertise in cognitive computational modelling and an interest in applying computational approaches to digital education data. The position is funded through a collaboration between the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. The fellow will work on an ambitious interdisciplinary programme that applies theory-driven cognitive computational modelling to rich, intensive educational data from learning platforms, digital learning tools such as mobile apps, and ecological momentary assessments, working closely with Prof Kou Murayama, Prof Michiko Sakaki and Prof Peter Dayan.

The fellow will be based at the Hector Research Institute and affiliated with the Max Planck Institute, with access to a wide range of educational datasets and to computational facilities and expertise. They will have substantial freedom to develop a research programme on computationally tractable questions such as continual and self-directed learning, curiosity, metacognition, motivation, procrastination, self-regulated learning or representational change, giving an opportunity to build an independent profile at the intersection of computational modelling, psychology and education.

Requirements

Applicants need a PhD in psychology, neuroscience, computer science or a related field, or expect to obtain one by the start date, strong experience in cognitive computational modelling, and a strong research track record, for example through peer-reviewed publications or third-party funding. Prior experience in education research is not required, but candidates must show strong interest in and commitment to it. Proficiency in German is beneficial but not required. The university gives preference to equally qualified candidates with disabilities and encourages qualified women to apply.

What you get

The full-time position is at pay grade E 13 TV-L and lasts three years, with possible extension depending on funding. Employment is carried out by the central university administration.

How to apply

Applicants send a cover letter, a CV, contact details of three referees and copies of degree certificates and transcripts, combined in a single PDF file, to the Hector Research Institute, and indicate how they learned about the position for internal purposes only.

Key dates

The application deadline is 31 October 2026.
