Overview

The University of Exeter is offering a full-time, fixed-term Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy. This role is funded by the QuIMS project, which explores mechanical systems for quantum technologies. The appointment is for a duration of two years, beginning in December 2026. The workplace is located on site in the United Kingdom.

Who can apply

Candidates must hold a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification or experience in physics, materials science, or engineering. Applicants require practical, hands-on cleanroom nanofabrication experience, along with a documented record of high-quality research publications. Experience in fabricating suspended graphene or van der Waals heterostructures is preferred.

What you get

The starting salary ranges from £44,352 to £46,970 per annum on Grade F, with the exact placement dependent on the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience.

Requirements

The role involves fabricating nanoscale devices using the university cleanroom and characterisation facilities. Duties include device design, electron-beam lithography, deposition, etching, material transfer, and working with suspended structures. Responsibilities also require optimising process flows, characterising devices, improving fabrication yield and reproducibility, maintaining clear process records, and collaborating with experimental and theoretical colleagues. Furthermore, researchers must plan and deliver research, communicate clearly, support less experienced researchers, contribute to publications, presentations, and proposals, and demonstrate a commitment to safe laboratory practice and an inclusive working environment.

Key dates

The application closing date is 2026-11-09.
