Overview

The Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Professor Lida Kanari. The post is a one-year fixed-term, full-time position on site in Oxford, funded by a UKRI Medical Research Council grant called Algebraic topology bridging the gap between single neurons and networks. The start date is flexible, with an earliest start of 1 January 2027, and applicants able to start between 1 January and 1 June 2027 are particularly welcome.

What you will do

The postholder joins a research group in applied mathematics and computational neuroscience and carries out research within the remit of the large-scale project, whether independently, collaboratively with colleagues in Oxford or with mathematicians elsewhere. They contribute to the wider Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics research group and write up results, alone or with co-authors, for refereed journals and proceedings. There may be a small amount of teaching, at most three hours a week during term.

Requirements

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in applied mathematics or a related discipline and have enough specialist knowledge to work within established research programmes. Excellent communication skills are essential, including writing for publication, presenting research proposals and results and representing the group at meetings.

What you get

The salary is 41,636 to 47,779 GBP per year.

How to apply

Applications are made online. Applicants upload a statement setting out how they meet the selection criteria, a CV with a full publication list, details of teaching experience, a statement of research interests and the contact details of two referees, who must send their letters by the closing date. The vacancy reference is 189002. Applications are particularly welcome from women and Black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in such posts in the department.

Key dates

The closing date is 12.00 noon UK time on Monday 26 October 2026, and interviews are expected in early November 2026.
