Overview

The University of Edinburgh, through its Centre for Inflammation Research, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. This role focuses on Cellular Senescence in Lung Injury and is funded by the Baillie Gifford Pandemic Science Hub. The successful candidate will work on defining the contribution of cellular senescence to lung injury and inflammation using translationally relevant human models. Responsibilities include utilizing a high-content, image analysis-based cell painting assay to characterize senescent cells and their responses to known senolytic drugs, optimizing the process for high-throughput screening to identify novel drugs from available libraries, and testing the senolytic potential of lead candidate molecules in a human precision cut lung slice model of irradiation-induced senescence.

Requirements

Candidates must have experience preparing and working with human Precision Cut Lung Slices, along with extensive tissue culture experience including established cell lines, primary cell culture, and the characterization of cellular senescence. Required technical skills include imaging techniques such as multiplex immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry, live cell imaging, and confocal microscopy, as well as assay development and standardization. Applicants are also expected to have expertise in quantitative real-time PCR and immunoassays including flow cytometry, ELISA or cytokine bead array, and western blotting.

What you get

The position offers a salary ranging from £41,064 to £48,822 per annum. The role is full-time at 35 hours per week for a fixed term of six months, though part-time working patterns may be considered. The working arrangement is on-site at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom to accommodate necessary laboratory work. Employees benefit from professional development opportunities, a chance to broaden experience, engagement in leading-edge research, and opportunities for publication.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is November 4, 2026, at 23:59.
