Overview

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in oceanography. The postholder will join the Ocean Dynamics group under Professor John Taylor and Associate Professor Oscar Branson. The post is available from 15 November 2026 or another agreed start date.

The project is part of a wider programme coordinated by Frontier Climate to study ocean alkalinity enhancement. The Cambridge team will build a high-resolution model of the near-field environment around the site of the 2025 field trial run by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, working closely with Dr Adam Subhas and colleagues to investigate possible alkalinity loss through secondary mineral precipitation. The simulations will also help to assess sampling strategies. Physical processes at the site will be represented with the Oceananigans.jl package, and OceanBioME.jl will be used to model how dissolving and sinking particles interact with seawater carbon chemistry.

The role holder will plan and manage their own research, work closely with others, explain technical material clearly and build internal and external collaborations. They may also help supervise student projects, develop students' research skills, give instruction or deliver seminars.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have, or soon expect to be awarded, a PhD in oceanography, physics or a related field, with experience in ocean modelling. Experience with Oceananigans is highly desirable, and knowledge of seawater carbon chemistry is helpful but not essential.

What you get

The full-time, fixed-term post pays £37,694 to £46,049 per annum, with funds available for 24 months in the first instance. It is based on site.

How to apply

Applications are made online and need details of two academic referees, a full CV, a list of publications and a description of recent research of no more than two pages. At least one referee should be contactable at any point in the selection process. The reference LE51157 should be quoted.

Key dates

The closing date is 19 October 2026.
