Policy and Research Officer – DFAT Australian Embassy The Hague: International Law and Research Job Opportunity
Overview
The Australian Embassy in The Hague is hiring a Policy and Research Officer at the LE4 level for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The post is a 12-month non-ongoing contract for locally engaged staff. The officer will support Australia's engagement with international legal and accountability institutions based in The Hague, including the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the Hague Conference on Private International Law and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Employment conditions are governed by Dutch law, and the Fair Work Act 2009 does not apply.
What the role involves
The officer will carry out research and analysis, prepare briefings and reports, monitor developments, support meetings and visits, build professional networks and give wider policy and administrative help to the Embassy. The postholder may represent the Embassy at meetings of Hague-based organisations. A significant part of the work concerns accountability efforts following the July 2014 downing of flight MH17, including monitoring legal developments, preparing reports and assisting with commemorative activities. Work on international law, political affairs, human rights and budget matters may also arise, depending on priorities.
Who can apply
Applicants must already hold the legal right to live and work in the Netherlands. The Embassy cannot offer visa sponsorship or relocation assistance, and applications without a valid Dutch residence and work permit will not be considered. The role is relevant to people with experience or qualifications in international relations, international law, political affairs, human rights, policy research, diplomacy, international organisations or legal research. Strong skills in analysis, interpersonal communication and representing Australia's interests are important.
