Overview

Oxford MeasurEd is seeking 10 freelance Writing Assessors to support an education research project funded by the Education Endowment Foundation titled Explicit vs Metacognitive Writing Instruction: A Teacher Choices Trial. This research examines teaching approaches for writing in primary schools by investigating how different methods influence the development of sentence structure and grammar in Year 3 and Year 4 pupils. The role offers remote work from the United Kingdom, involving an estimated workload of 16 hours in December 2026 and 32 hours in May 2027, totaling approximately six days of scoring work across both periods.

Who can apply

Applicants must hold Qualified Teacher Status, an equivalent education qualification, or be currently studying toward a relevant teaching qualification. Candidates are required to have at least three years of experience teaching, supporting, or assessing primary English, including recent experience within the last three years. Additional preference is given to those with experience working with Key Stage 2 pupils, specifically in Years 3 and 4. Applicants must reside in the United Kingdom with access to a computer or laptop and a reliable internet connection.

What you get

The position offers a daily rate of £300, which is equivalent to £37.50 per hour. Payment applies to assigned and completed scoring work, and candidates placed in a reserve pool will be paid for time spent attending online training.

Requirements

Assessors will use an online scoring platform and prescribed marking guidance to evaluate short writing tasks completed by pupils. Responsibilities include applying marking criteria consistently, minimizing scoring bias, identifying and reporting technical issues or uncertainties, resolving scoring queries, and participating in standardization activities. Candidates must maintain data confidentiality, protect personal information, work independently, and meet strict assessment deadlines. Furthermore, candidates must be available for mandatory online training scheduled for 2 and 3 December 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM GMT, alongside approximately four additional hours of training in May 2027.

How to apply

Candidates must submit an online application form alongside a CV. Shortlisted applicants are expected to be contacted for brief video interviews lasting approximately 15 minutes during the week commencing 26 October 2026.

Key dates

The application deadline is 26 October 2026 at 9:00 AM BST. Mandatory online training sessions take place on 2 and 3 December 2026, with assessment periods occurring in the first half of December 2026 and May 2027.
