Overview

Oxfam International is recruiting a Safeguarding Advisor for Oxfam in Africa (OiA), providing strategic and technical safeguarding leadership across Sub-Saharan Africa. The post is full-time on a one-year fixed-term contract at internal grade C1, National, with pay in line with Oxfam's applicable range. It can be based flexibly in an African country where Oxfam has an office or presence, provided the candidate can legally work there and an employment contract can be set up directly or through a hosting affiliate. It is not a work-from-anywhere role. Oxfam cannot guarantee work permits and offers no relocation support.

The advisor works to protect communities, staff and partners from sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment and child abuse, acting as a trusted partner to the One Africa Director, the Oxfam in Africa Leadership Team and Country Directors. The role sits in the People and Culture Team, with a matrix link to Oxfam International's safeguarding function and work with country-level focal points.

What you will do

Responsibilities include delivering Oxfam's safeguarding strategy and programme across the region, building safeguarding capacity in country offices and partners through advice, training and facilitation, and coordinating or supporting survivor-centred case management. The advisor gives expert advice on investigations and allegations, designs inclusive community feedback and complaint mechanisms with referral pathways, and supports organizational culture change grounded in power awareness, feminist principles and Oxfam's values. The role also involves joining professional safeguarding networks and representing Oxfam externally.

Requirements

The role suits experienced professionals in safeguarding, protection, investigations, case management, humanitarian or development work, or gender programming. English and French are required, along with the existing legal right to work in the chosen location.
