Overview

The One Mara Carbon Project (OMCP), run by Mara Carbon CLG, is seeking a full-time Communications Officer based in Aitong, Maasai Mara, Kenya. OMCP is a large landscape initiative in the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem that promotes sustainable rangeland management, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and better livelihoods for pastoralist communities. With community conservancies, landowners and county governments, it applies regenerative grazing practices and generates high-integrity carbon credits under internationally recognised standards.

The officer leads communications, storytelling and stakeholder engagement, working with conservancies, communities, government agencies, donors and conservation partners. The post reports to the Carbon Manager and is a two-year renewable contract, subject to performance and project funding.

What you will do

The officer develops and runs the communication and visibility strategy and produces newsletters, brochures, factsheets, presentations, success stories, press releases and social media content. They document community experiences, field activities and impacts through photography, video and writing, manage the website and social media, coordinate media engagement, keep branding consistent, prepare materials for workshops and community forums, turn technical carbon and climate information into accessible content, keep an organised digital archive and support documentation for monitoring, reporting and carbon verification, while respecting community rights, informed consent and cultural sensitivities.

Requirements

Applicants need a Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, public relations, development communication, media studies, marketing or a related field, and at least three years of relevant experience. Required skills include excellent English writing, editing and storytelling, communication strategy experience, strong social media skills, stakeholder engagement, independent and team working, and willingness to travel across the landscape. Photography, videography and basic graphic design are highly desirable. Preference goes to candidates with experience in climate and carbon markets, nature-based solutions, conservation, rangeland management, pastoralist and Indigenous communities, conservancy programmes or donor-funded projects.
