New York Times Editing Residency 2027–2029: Paid Two-Year Programme for Early-Career Journalists
Overview
The New York Times Editing Residency 2027-2029 is a paid, full-time, two-year program designed to develop the next generation of newsroom editors. Residents rotate across different desks of The New York Times newsroom, work alongside experienced journalists and editors, and take part in dedicated training and speaker programs. The aim is to strengthen editorial judgment, clarity, precision and contextual awareness, including in visual, multimedia, data and interactive storytelling.
The Times plans to select three residents, who are expected to start in late January 2027. The rotational structure is meant to expose residents to different editorial environments, workflows, subject areas and forms of storytelling, and to help them see where their strengths lie.
What you get
Residents are paid, work full time and receive employee benefits. They gain hands-on experience contributing to the editorial process, guidance from experienced editors, dedicated training, access to speaker programs with journalists and newsroom leaders, and the chance to build a professional network across desks.
Who can apply
The program is aimed at early-career and developing journalists who want to become editors. The most competitive candidates have between two and seven years of professional journalism experience, a clear commitment to the craft of editing and some newsroom editing experience. Relevant experience can include editing colleagues' work, managing a publication, fact-checking, editing newsletters or digital content, reviewing multimedia scripts, coordinating reporting projects or giving structural feedback to writers.
The Times says it aims to recruit candidates from diverse backgrounds. No racial, ethnic, gender or national group is set as an exclusive eligibility category.
How to apply
Candidates apply through the official application page and provide all requested information and supporting materials. A strong application explains why the applicant wants to become an editor and gives concrete examples of how their experience has prepared them. After the deadline, program directors and editors from across the newsroom select the residents, looking at journalism and editing experience, commitment to editorial work, career potential and fit with the program's goals.
Key dates
