Overview
NATO International Staff is recruiting two Assistant Legal Advisers for its Office of Legal Affairs at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. One post is graded G17 and the other G15/G17, and both are full-time. The G17 post carries a monthly salary of €8,273.12. The contract is initially for three years and may be renewed for up to another three years, subject to the applicable conditions. The post suits experienced lawyers with a background in public international law and/or international administrative law.
The Office of Legal Affairs advises the Secretary General, the International Staff, the North Atlantic Council, NATO committees and subsidiary bodies. It supports policy development, negotiates and drafts agreements, represents the Organization in litigation and engages with Allied legal offices. The adviser works as a generalist with particular focus on public international law, privileges and immunities, the legal framework on the use of force and law applicable during armed conflict, other law relevant to military planning and operations, international administrative law, employment matters and governance policy.
Duties include following developments in international law and case law, researching legal and policy questions, preparing recommendations, helping draft or review NATO policies, advising on legal questions affecting NATO and NATO-led operations, and preparing legal texts, memoranda, briefings and lectures. The adviser may also assist with NATO's defence before boards and tribunals, with agreements and with committee meetings, take charge of projects, and coordinate legal issues with NATO agencies, the International Military Staff and Allied Command Operations and Transformation.

Requirements
Candidates need a university law degree from a recognised institution and appropriate professional legal qualifications, plus at least five years of experience providing legal advice in public international law and/or international administrative law.
