Overview

The Max Planck Institute for Political and Social Science is hiring two student research assistants for its Department of Inequality, Transformation, and Conflict. Based in Göttingen, Germany, these fixed-term positions offer students a chance to gain hands-on academic research and data analysis experience while continuing their studies. The work involves approximately 30 to 40 hours per month and runs from a start date of 1 December 2026 until 30 November 2028.

Who can apply

Applicants must be students enrolled in subjects connected to the social sciences and quantitative research, specifically studying sociology, political science, economics, or related disciplines. Candidates are required to possess a very good knowledge of quantitative methods, confidence in using statistical software, and practical experience with either Stata or R. Additionally, strong language skills are mandatory, requiring a very good command of both English and German. Familiarity with qualitative research methods is considered an advantageous extra qualification rather than a mandatory minimum requirement.

What you get

Successful candidates will earn an hourly salary of 15.00 EUR per hour, which increases to 15.61 EUR per hour for candidates who already hold a bachelor's degree. The roles provide an opportunity to work in a leading academic environment, supporting research activities and data analysis within the Department of Inequality, Transformation, and Conflict. Assistants will gain insight into how research projects are designed, implemented, and analyzed, helping them build practical skills for future academic, research, policy, or data-driven careers.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the Institute's online application portal.
