Malala Fund is hiring a Chief Operating Officer for its Executive Office in Washington, D.C. The full-time role is hybrid, with regular international travel including quarterly visits to Malala Fund offices and countries of operation. The starting salary range is US$210,200 to US$237,200. Malala Fund works toward a world where all girls can learn and lead, advocating for resources and policy changes that support secondary education for girls, investing in local education leaders and amplifying girls' voices.
What the role involves
The COO is the CEO's principal operating partner and joins the Executive Team. They help turn strategy into multi-year and annual priorities, operating plans, budgets, milestones and performance measures, connect functional and country priorities and resolve bottlenecks. Financial duties include overseeing budgeting, reforecasting, multi-year planning, scenario analysis, the Finance function, controls, restricted funds, cash planning, reporting, audits and statutory obligations. Operational duties cover contracts, procurement, information technology, data systems, business continuity, security coordination, enterprise risk, compliance and organisational resilience, plus executive oversight of safeguarding. The COO also leads Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning and may, subject to Board approval, serve as interim Board Secretary.
Who can apply
Applicants should have 15 or more years of progressive senior leadership across operations, finance and enterprise management, including leading operations or finance in a global organisation of similar or larger size and experience leading operations in the Global South. Strong financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting and resource allocation skills, experience overseeing risk and compliance, experience with advocacy, policy influence, grantmaking or systems-change work, and experience leading transition, growth, restructuring or financial pressure are expected.

Exceptional people management, communication, cross-cultural sensitivity, diplomacy and discretion are needed, along with fluency in English and a demonstrated commitment to the organisation's mission.
