Overview
Johns Hopkins University is inviting applications for multiple tenure-track Assistant Professor positions at its new School of Government and Policy, based at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C. The school is being built as a multidisciplinary hub on government effectiveness, public policy and complex societal challenges, and expects to grow to about 35 full-time faculty over its founding years.
The search spans disciplines including political science, law, sociology, history, philosophy, computer science, economics, public administration, urban planning, management and organizational behavior, psychology, operations research, industrial and systems engineering and cognitive science.
Research areas of interest
The school has named several priorities: cities and communities, covering local governance, state capacity, housing, school choice, transportation and local finance; frontier AI, including AI alignment and governance, labor-market effects, regulatory theory and AI evaluation and auditing; political philosophy and theory relevant to public policy; public-sector innovation and management, including institutional reform, procurement and technology adoption in government; and regulation, bureaucracy and public administration, including civil service systems, federalism, implementation of large programmes and regulatory capture.
Who can apply
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in an appropriate field or a J.D. by the time the appointment begins. They should show outstanding independent research ability, promise for excellent teaching, strong mentoring potential, potential for public engagement and the ability to work across disciplines.
What you get
The expected overall salary range is $100,000 to $200,000, depending on discipline, rank and other factors, and not every candidate will be eligible for the top of the range.
