Overview

The Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford is seeking talented postdoctoral researchers for a Hooke/Titchmarsh Research Fellowship in Complex Systems. The fellowship scheme lets researchers pursue an independent programme in applied or pure mathematics and join a large cohort of leading fellows at the institute. The post is based in the Andrew Wiles Building on Woodstock Road in Oxford.

The fellowship is full time and fixed term for up to 36 months, and applications for job shares or part-time working to accommodate family circumstances will be considered. Candidates should have a background in mathematics or physics and a record of outstanding research in the mathematical theory of complex systems, including random matrix theory and its applications and statistical mechanics, interpreted broadly. They will complement and diversify existing strengths in the Mathematical Physics Research Group and related groups.

To help build their academic profile, fellows contribute up to three hours of teaching a week for the 24 weeks of each academic year, averaged over the fellowship to allow for extended visits elsewhere. The nature of the teaching follows departmental need, and fellows may be asked to teach in a college to cover a member of faculty.

Requirements

Candidates should hold, or be close to completing, a doctorate in mathematics or a related discipline. They need evidence of independence and the ability to do research of the highest standard, an outstanding record of papers in major international journals for their career stage, and a realisable and relevant research plan that would strengthen the institute's research profile. A full list of selection criteria is in the job description.

What you get

The fellowship pays £43,984 to £47,779 per annum and gives the freedom to run an independent research programme. The department holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award and the university an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award.

How to apply

Applications are made online. Applicants must ask two referees to send reference letters directly to the department by the closing date, and enquiries should quote vacancy reference 188672.

Key dates

Only applications received before 12.00 noon UK time on 19 October 2026 will be considered.

About University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England. Teaching there is documented from the late eleventh century, which makes it one of the oldest universities in the world, although its exact founding date is unknown. It has no single central campus, and its buildings are spread throughout the city. Every student belongs to a college, and the colleges operate alongside the university's academic departments, which are grouped into divisions.
