Overview

The Guillaume Dupaix International PhD Scholarship, established by the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, supports PhD students from selected partner countries who want to spend part of their doctoral research at the University of Luxembourg. It is a mobility scholarship for short research stays rather than a funding award for a whole PhD, and it is open to students across all faculties. The aim is to attract outstanding international doctoral students, promote researcher mobility and strengthen academic partnerships.

What you get

Recipients receive a monthly mobility stipend of approximately €1,150 and a €1,500 travel grant. They gain access to the university's research environment, collaboration with researchers and facilities, and the chance to widen their international networks. Stays last a minimum of one month, and the exact length depends on the research collaboration and the student's doctoral programme.

Who can apply

Eligible partner countries are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay and Vietnam. Applicants must be pursuing a PhD, be accepted into the selected programme at the University of Luxembourg, be nominated by their home university, intend to carry out research mobility there, and not receive Luxembourg State Financial Aid for Higher Education (formerly CEDIES). The scholarship cannot be combined with another Luxembourg Government grant or a similar scholarship from a private sponsor in Luxembourg, and it may be withdrawn for academic misconduct, unsatisfactory performance or withdrawal from the programme.

How to apply

The home university first nominates the student, since individual applications without nomination are not eligible. Applications are accepted throughout the year and reviewed by the International Relations Office. Eligible students are automatically considered, ranked mainly on academic excellence, and only the top-ranked candidates receive offers. On arrival, recipients sign a Scholarship Agreement and a sworn declaration, and they should prepare for residence permit and health insurance requirements.

Key dates

The current application deadline is 31 December 2026.
