Overview

The European Union Delegation to the United Nations in New York is hiring a Policy Assistant for its Political 4 section on UN Horizontal Issues. The EU Delegation works with enhanced observer status and coordinates with EU Member States so that the Union can present common positions across the UN system. The assistant supports the EU's work on UN accountability, administration, oversight mechanisms, internal justice and financial and budgetary issues, under the Head of the UN Horizontal Issues Section.

Duties include assisting in coordinating Member State experts during UN General Assembly Fifth Committee negotiations, drafting policy language, occasionally representing the EU for the Head of Section, preparing reports and political assessments for EU headquarters, supporting preparations for General Assembly High-Level Week, and helping consolidate inputs for the Delegation's annual planning and reporting. Topics include the Office of Internal Oversight Services, the Joint Inspection Unit, the UN system of administration of justice and the Ethics Office.

What you get

The position is full-time and in person, at 37.5 hours per week, based at the Delegation in New York. The hire is a Local Agent Group II with an initial two-year contract, renewable twice. Salary depends on verified experience, at about $89,000 for around 2 years, $93,000 for around 6 years and $97,000 for around 10 years. The expected start date is October 1, 2026.

Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor's degree (a master's is an asset), at least two years of professional experience in public administration or international relations gained after the qualifying degree, and a thorough working knowledge of written and spoken English. Valid U.S. work authorization is essential, as the Delegation does not sponsor visas. Strong analytical, drafting, coordination and time-management skills are sought, along with flexibility on working hours. Data analysis skills and Fifth Committee experience are assets.
