- In December 2022, over 190 countries adopted the Global Biodiversity Framework, committing to protect and effectively manage 30% of the world’s terrestrial, inland water, coastal, and marine areas by 2030—commonly known as the 30×30 Target.
- However, global assessments show that only around 3.5% of the world’s oceans are currently fully or highly protected, highlighting the urgent need for stronger conservation efforts and greater public accountability.
