DLA Piper Africa, through its Kenyan member firm IKM Advocates, is hiring an Associate in its Tax Practice in Nairobi. The role is aimed at qualified advocates with two to four years of post-qualification experience who want to handle complex tax matters for local and international clients.
IKM Advocates is a full-service commercial law firm with more than three decades of experience advising businesses, financial institutions, governments, development finance institutions, private equity firms, multinationals and family offices. As part of DLA Piper Africa it has access to a network of more than 4,000 lawyers.
What the role involves
The associate advises on tax compliance, dispute resolution, corporate structuring and regulatory matters. Dispute work covers handling cases from audit and investigation through objections, the Tax Appeals Tribunal and, where needed, superior courts. Advisory work includes legal opinions, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, financing and cross-border investments. The associate also deals with the Kenya Revenue Authority during audits and negotiations, supports transactions through tax due diligence, tax health checks and review of share purchase and business transfer agreements, and keeps up with changes in tax law, tribunal and court decisions, budget developments and treaty trends, producing client alerts and internal resources.
Requirements
Applicants must hold an LLB from a recognised university, a Kenya School of Law qualification, admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a valid practising certificate. They need two to four years of specialist tax experience from a top-tier law firm or a Big Four firm. CPA or ACCA qualifications are an advantage. The firm looks for strong technical tax knowledge, legal research and analytical ability, commercial awareness, problem-solving skills, client relationship skills and the ability to manage several assignments at once.
