Civilization Research Institute Hiring Cybersecurity Engineer – Remote USA Opportunity 2026
Overview
The Civilization Research Institute (CRI) is recruiting a full-time Cybersecurity Engineer to protect its networks, systems, communications and data. CRI is a research centre that studies and aims to reduce catastrophic and existential risks, covering technology, governance, ecological tipping points, financial systems, civilization theory and sense-making. It describes its workplace as high-trust and low-ego. The engineer reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer.
The job is listed as remote, but it is based out of Asheville, North Carolina, and strong remote candidates may be considered if they can travel to headquarters when needed.
Responsibilities cover several areas. For hardware and software security, the engineer reviews and configures technology with the CTO and manages tools such as password managers, VPNs, secure communications and document-sharing platforms. For threat monitoring and incident response, the engineer watches network traffic, logs and alerts, runs vulnerability assessments and penetration tests, and limits disruption after incidents. The post also includes building disaster-recovery plans, developing security policies, access controls and data-protection procedures, running compliance audits, training colleagues, protecting websites and online accounts, researching security technologies, assessing service providers and, at headquarters, securing physical equipment.
Requirements
Candidates need a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering or a related subject, and at least four years of experience in incident detection, incident response and digital forensics. Experience with firewalls, Office 365 security, VSX and endpoint security is expected, along with programming in one or more of Python, C++, Java, Ruby, Node, Go or PowerShell. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, the ability to work under pressure and knowledge of current threats are also needed. The role suits experienced professionals rather than people seeking a first security job.
What you get
CRI mentions mentorship from senior leaders, meaningful projects, wellness resources and flexible benefits for full-time staff. Pay is described as competitive and may depend on experience, education, training, certifications and location.
How to apply
The application asks whether candidates are authorised to work in the United States and whether they will need sponsorship now or later, so international applicants should read those questions carefully. No deadline is stated.
