Overview
CIVICUS is hiring a Head of Finance to provide strategic and operational leadership for its global financial management. CIVICUS is a global alliance of more than 17,000 members in over 180 countries that works to strengthen civil society and protect civic freedoms by monitoring threats to civic space, supporting the right to organise, promoting accountability and transparency, amplifying excluded voices, particularly from the Global South, and building the capacity of civil society organisations. The position is remote.
The Head of Finance works closely with the Chief Operations Officer to embed sound financial management across the organisation. Duties include leading financial strategy, managing budgeting and planning, overseeing financial reporting and audits, ensuring compliance with donor, statutory and regulatory requirements, strengthening systems and controls, giving financial insight for decisions and managing and mentoring the finance team. The role covers complex donor rules, including those of European Union institutions, US foundations, European government agencies and other funders, and involves training non-finance colleagues.
Requirements
Applicants need a recognised accounting qualification such as ACCA, CPA, CIMA or CIPFA, or an equivalent, at least seven years of post-qualification experience and a minimum of three years as a Head of Finance or in a similar senior role. Experience in the nonprofit sector, managing restricted donor funding and leading geographically dispersed teams is required, along with strong knowledge of financial compliance, excellent written and spoken English, and analytical and problem-solving ability. Candidates should explain financial matters clearly to non-finance colleagues, have implemented financial technology and know human rights and social justice principles. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
