Overview
Chatham House, also known as the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is recruiting a Research Associate in Energy and Climate for its Environment and Society Centre. Chatham House is an independent policy institute that aims to help governments, businesses and civil society build a sustainably secure, prosperous and just world. The Research Associate works with the Energy and Climate Lead, Pelin Zorlu, on policy research into the global energy transition, climate diplomacy and the geopolitical effects of climate change.
Research themes include climate diplomacy and international climate governance, the energy transition and energy security, climate-related geopolitical and economic risks, resource competition and critical minerals, the influence of China and emerging middle powers in the global energy landscape, and governance approaches that strengthen climate ambition and implementation.
Requirements
The duties include mixed-methods policy research, literature reviews, stakeholder mapping and data analysis, writing papers, reports, policy briefs and articles, presenting findings, organizing international conferences, workshops, roundtables and consultations, supporting publication with communications and editorial teams, developing concept notes and funding proposals, building partnerships with universities, think tanks, NGOs and international institutions, managing stakeholder databases and supporting the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
Applicants should have proven experience researching energy transition, climate diplomacy, resource competition or environmental policy in academic, government, business or policy settings. Essential skills include analytical and critical thinking, policy-relevant research, strong written and verbal communication, drafting funding proposals and concept notes, explaining complex issues to different audiences, teamwork, supporting policy events, fact-checking and organisational skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and database management. Desirable strengths include speaking at conferences, working with international stakeholders, knowledge of climate governance, energy systems or international environmental negotiations, and experience with research institutions or global policy organizations.
