Beecroft Fellow in Cosmology
Overview
The University of Oxford Department of Physics is recruiting a Beecroft Fellow in Cosmology, based at the Denys Wilkinson Building in Oxford. The fellow joins the Beecroft Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (BIPAC) and works within a loose network of researchers who pursue their own independent projects. The post reports to the group leader Prof. Pedro G. Ferreira.
Research can cover cosmic microwave background physics or areas such as cosmology, galaxy formation, numerical astrophysics, early universe and gravitational physics, and survey science linked to the large upcoming surveys. The main emphasis is on applying new machine learning approaches, from deep learning to symbolic methods, to pull new physics out of forthcoming cosmological survey data.
What you get
The position is full time and fixed term for 36 months. Pay is between 39,424 and 47,779 pounds per year at Grade 7. The fellow may also have the chance to teach.
Requirements
Applicants should hold a doctorate in physics or a related field, or be close to obtaining one, ideally with a strong background in physics or astrophysics. Experience in cosmology, computational astrophysics, early universe or gravitational physics is an advantage.
The fellow will build a personal research programme in theoretical cosmology, which may include numerical modelling or data analysis, together with work on gravitational waves, and will interact with faculty members. They need to show they can manage their own research and administrative duties, including small-scale project management and meeting several deadlines at once. Candidates should have a record of contributing to publications or presentations and be able to propose new research ideas and ways to bring in research funding. The fellow takes part in the academic life of BIPAC and the astrophysics group, including seminars, colloquia and journal clubs.
How to apply
Applications are made online and need a supporting statement, a CV and details of three referees. Referees are asked to send their letters before the closing date.
Key dates
Only applications received before midday on Monday, 30 November 2026 can be considered.
About University of Oxford
The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England. Teaching there is documented from the late eleventh century, which makes it one of the oldest universities in the world, although its exact founding date is unknown. It has no single central campus, and its buildings are spread throughout the city. Every student belongs to a college, and the colleges operate alongside the university's academic departments, which are grouped into divisions.
